Paris #TravelBuddies

We woke up in our apartment in Brussels, Rue du Doyenne 65 1180. This is discussed in my previous blog when we stayed in Brussels. I wanted to come to Paris for the day because we were so close. We slept in – shock. We got a taxi to the train station and jumped on the train.

I pre-booked the tickets, mine costs around £35 return and I pretended Dylan was 3 so he could get on free. I booked in advance but I think the longer you leave it the more expensive it is. There are security checks so make sure you are there early, they never spot checked us but they could had then we would have been late. We arrived at the station Paris Gare du Nord. As soon as we got off the train I knew we would just love it there and I was right. We had some croissants for breakfast then walked around for a while because it was such a nice day. We got on the city bus which has a crossover onto another bus – we bought the tickets when we arrived. The bus was similar to the Hop On Hop Off bus but it was called the Big Bus. This took us all around Paris.

Everyone told me that French people were rude but this is a load of Shit. They were friendly, polite and very helpful especially with Dylan. The only bad experience I had was on the crossover between the buses…I had our bags in one hand and a map in the other…I felt something in my pocket and looked down to see a man trying to pull my phone out of my jacket. I managed to grab his wrist in time then he let go. He was in his 20’s and well dressed. I started screaming at him and even though we didn’t speak the same language he knew I was raging so he walked away pretty quickly.

I would not hold that experience against Paris because it happens in every city. I’m from Glasgow so I cant judge any other city. We went to the Arc de Triomphe which was beautiful, the street leading up to it is beautiful. The only downside is that there are so many cars! Idiot tourists were standing in the middle of the road trying to get a good picture but it was so dangerous. I shouted over to them to move but they didn’t listen.

The two attactions that Dylan loved were the Lovre Pyramids and the Eiffel Tower. Dylan learned how to count to 5 in French, so he used his new found knowledge towards counting the glass panels but lost count.

He kept referring to the Eiffel Tower as the evil tower without realising..it was so embarrassing but funny. The people around us found it funny thank god. We went to a cute (very expensive) little French macroon shop on the way back to the station. We made our way back to Brussels, Dylan fell asleep on the train after eating the macaroons. It was just a lovely day all round. Paris is absolutely gobsmackingly beautiful and it is probably my favourite city that I have been to with Dylan so far.

Brussels #TravelBuddies

Again we flew Ryan Air. I chose Belgium because I had never been there before and the flights were less than £30 return for me and even less than that for Dylan.

My friend said that she had been here before and it was amazing so thought I would check it out anyway.

We arrived at Charleroi airport but still had a bit of travelling to go. I had decided I wanted to stay nearer the city centre than the airport this time so we got the Brussell City Bus and headed straight there. As I said I only take hand luggage so we skipped all the queues for the bus. The buses are clearly sign posted.. every 30 mins and the journey to town takes 1 hour. Children under 4 go free and I think my ticket was around £14.  I had purchased my tickets online so I didn’t have to mess about but you can buy them at the stands at the airport. I had it booked for the wrong month but the driver didn’t notice so it didn’t matter

We were dropped off by the bus to Gare Du Midi station. Because it was late from there we jumped a taxi to the apartment which was about 8 Euros, 15 minutes up the road. Our apartment was purchased on Air BnB and by far the cutest wee studio room ever. We stayed at Rue du Doyenne 65, Bruxelles, 1180. It had a kitchen, living room, bathroom/showeroom. It was a very confined space but it was everything we needed and 37 Euros a night so a great deal. I think it isactually 40 a night now but still a great deal.

The area where we were had lots of shops, pubs, restuarants…we picked up breakfast to make back in the apartment so we could eat that while lounging about in the morning. There was a tv which was a bonus but we mainly used the Wifi for the Ipad anyway. The host was lovely, I text her a few times about where places were etc and got a reply straight away. Check in was easy. She gave me a code to type in a box at the door, this opened the box and the keys were there. Similar to checking out, she offered a later check out which was great as it suited our flights.

We enjoyed Brusells and what it had to offer, the people were friendly and helpful.  I wanted to start by visiting the Manneken Pis, 1000 Bruxelles. My mum spoke about seeing it when she was younger so thought it would be a good place to start. From our apartment you can head there by Uber £15 for around 25 minute drive. Failing that you can get the 51 Van Haelen train to the city centre with a 10 minute walk after. Sat Nav again will come in handy. The Manneken Pis was absolutely tiny. I thought it was going to be really big! Still though it was cute and Dylan thought it was funny.

I had promised Dylan a Belgium waffle so we walked around a found a stall by the Central Station. We sat eating in the station eating them and they were in-cred-ible! It was cold so we were wearing our hats and scarfs and it was just a lovely moment. The train station was beautiful too, all marble and classy.I had promised Dylan a Belgium waffle so we walked around a found a stall by the Central Station. We sat eating in the station eating them and they were in-cred-ible! It was cold so we were wearing our hats and scarfs and it was just a lovely moment. The train station was beautiful too, all marble and classy. It was absolutely massive. Way bigger than I had imagined. We didn't buy a ticket to go on the tour. We just walked around it on our own and played in the sun with Dylan's toy cars posing for pictures.

After this we walked up to the Mini Europe which isn’t far at all. Dylan absolutely loved it. This was a good opportunity to help him understand the different countries and the landmarks within them.

You can press the button at each country and it will play the national anthem and often the models will lights up or move. We spent hours here just walking around then we had lunch in the café. We made our way back to the bus and went back to the centre. We walked about the shops buying souvenirs and postcards. We went for Dinner then headed back to the apartment because we were leaving for Paris the next day. I thought that we could not go all the way to Belgium and not visit France. Another country to tick of that is just a train journey away…..

After the day we had in Paris (see my next blog) we came back to our apartment to go straight to sleep. In the morning we had a late check out so we spent the day walking about, getting lunch then relaxed in the apartment. We got the bus to the station where we got the coach back to the airport. I had the wrong month for our tickets purchase (again!), the driver noticed.. I had to fork out for a new one. gutted.

Amsterdam #TravelBuddies

Amsterdammmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!! I was so bloody excited to bring Dylan here.

I will say that I got judged, A LOT, for booking up here. People associate Amsterdam with drugs and sex but manage to completely override how absolutely beautiful the city is. I didn’t care If they judge me though because I knew Dylan would love it and I was correct.

This time we flew with Easy Jet. I really do not like Easy Jet at all but they were flying when I was going so couldn’t avoid it. The flights return were around £40 so grabbed a bargain. The way back was an absolute nightmare and I have hated Easy Jet since. Have I used them again? Well yes.

We flew from Edinburgh instead of Glasgow because it was cheaper.  Edinburgh has a play area for children so it kept Dylan busy.

We used AirBnB and stayed in a two bedroom apartment in Borneostraat, Indische Buurt, with a balcony. The stairs in the apartments / hostels in Amsterdam are very unusually steep. This can be difficult with a push chair but doable. If you can’t manage this I would recommend messaging the hosts first beforehand to double check.

Amsterdam is just beautiful, you could walk about for hours. As usual Dylan wanted to go to the zoo so the transport there was easy enough. The tram was 2 minutes away from the apartment we were staying, number 14, and the journey was only about 15 mins. You can buy tickets there and then. The Zoo again was huge and you can pretty much spend a full day there. We went for lunch to a little café about a 5 minute walk from the Zoo, we munched chocolate and pancakes. Dylan loved it a bit too much.

We made our way back to the city centre which was just utterly spectacular. The people were friendly and we walked up and down the canal for hours looking at the boats. There was a wee café with a couch outside that wee sat to watch the world go by. If he was older I would have rented bikes out. What I would say is the road are so busy with cars, trams and bikes…crossing roads car be scary at times.

We walked about for hours because the place just flows naturally so there is always things to do. We were all over the place. We went to the notorious Amsterdam sign, Hobbermastraat 19, we found a little cheese shops and tasted all the samples then on the way to go onto the Hop On Hop Off bus stop (15 Euros) there was a spot outside the Heineken Factory where Dylan wanted to watch the bikes again. There were no seats so we literally just sat on the pavement counting bikes and waving to the people cycling by. There were so many and most of them waved back. Dylan was so excited by this and said he wanted a bike..which I bought him that Christmas. We used Sat Nav to walk about because it was such a lovely dsy.

Parts of Amsterdam are for adults but they are out of the way so you don’t particularly stumble across them unless you go looking. At no point was this an issue with me being there with a child. I would 100% go because the people were friendly, the city was busy and vibrant also.  The way back was an absolute nightmare though, the worst airline experience I have had in my life. I got on the wrong train which was completely my fault however I JUST made it to the airport in time. I had already checked in so I only had to go through customs. Amsterdam airport is pretty big and due to me being so flustered I asked an Easy Jet worker where I go and she pointed to a lady. I walked over and showed her our boarding passes which she didn’t scan, she just opened the gate for me to walk through, we went through customs and some how ended up in a VIP area.

I sat for a minute or two just wondering where the hell I was. I knew straight away that I was in the wrong place because everyone was reading papers, drinking champagne. I started to panic so asked for help again to then be told I had been directed to the wrong place and had to go back. They said I cant go back through customs so I had to go the long way around to get back. I went absolutely mad at the poor guy who was trying to help. He suggested going to the customer service desk to explain. By the time I got all the way around I knew if I waited in customs again then I would miss my flight anyway, so I went straight to the service desk and the woman there was nothing but a bitch.

She was cold, insincere and anything but helpful. I literally only had enough money to get Dylan a sausage roll, he sat eating that and watched me cry. A few random people came over to ask me if I was ok but I never answered because I was in such a state. I put a post on Facebook which got a lot of feedback and support. A man I worked with paid for flights for Dylan and I to get home. I had to wait 14 hours in the airport before the next flight. Dylan wasn’t potty trained at this stage and we had no nappies so can imagine the nightmare that this was.

The McDonalds there had a play area and space to charge your phone. We sat in McDonalds for about 5 hours playing on the Ipad and trying to pass time. A McDonalds worker saw how upset I was, came over and sneakily slid Dylan a McFlurry without her manager seeing. I have never been so grateful in my life. I later sent McDonalds a thank you letter for her because that small gesture made Dylan happy, took guilt away from me and just restored my faith in Amsterdam after dealing with that horrid woman at the service desk. I complained to Easy Jet afterwards, but they washed their hands of it and said I should have been there on time. I was there on time but had the Easy Jet worked pointed to the commoner’s queue and not the VIP lounge then I would not have been in that situation. I have learned a massive lesson though, I will always arrive super early at the airport and have some money still in my account in case that happened again. Luckily Dylan is a great kid so it could have been so much worse. Would not put me off going back to Amsterdam but if I can avoid EasyJet then I will.

Warsaw #TravelBuddies

Poland was our next stop. If you have read my post on cheap flights then you will know that I do not book holidays with a chosen destination… I just pick where my son and I have not been before. Poland was purchased through Ryan Air. The flights were around £26 return with Dylan being tax free.

I have travelled a lot with Dylan but I remember being terrified at the idea of Poland. Every Polish person I have met has been lovely so I had no reason to be but I think it was because I knew nothing about Poland other than Polish people keep to themselves and can be quite abrupt at times. I know none of the language other than swear words either ha.

I wanted a new experience so I booked up.

We flew into Modlin airport. I decided to stay near Modlin airport because it was easier for flights to and from Scotland due to the times. I worked out beforehand that Warsaw city centre was easily accessible. The worst part is usually the stress to and from the airport so I wanted that part to be easier. I could not be happier with the choice.

I booked up through booking.com and chose the option to pay on arrival so I could save. I chose this hotel because it was near the airport and had a private shuttle to and from the hotel.  The shuttle was organised before hand and had my name printed on the window so I could recognise it was for me. Little did I know the hotel was like a castle. It was around £65 a night so fairly cheap (this is breakfast included)

I stayed at The Modlin Royal Hotel, http://www.royalhotel.pl/, Szpitalna 93, 05-160 Modlin, Poland.

The staff were lovely, spoke English and answered any questions. They had set up a cot (even though Dylan didn't need it) in the room which was massive! The had a big tv and wifi so seemed perfect. Outside they had a big sandpit area and a large seating area. This was also right beside a big play park which the kids can play on where you can watch over them. Dylan would have happily played there all day. We woke up early the next morning and went down for breakfast which was lovely. Dylan really liked all the food and put some fruit in our bag for the day ahead. (The staff didn’t mind). We tried Jajecnica na Kielbasie which is a scrambled egg and sausage traditional breakfast. It wasn't for me but Dylan enjoyed it.

Our next stop was Warsaw City centre. We could have went directly there but I decided to get the hotel shuttle back to the airport then get the City Link bus directly to the city centre, Modlinbus, which was around £6 and Dylan was free. I preferred this as it was more straight forward than trying to use transport links. It runs to the Palace of Culture and Science which is a main tourist spot which you cannot miss. It takes around 50 minutes and runs throughout the day. We were able to buy a ticket on arrival but im assuming you can prebook also. Normally with buses to and from the airport you can get a discount if you buy online.

It was quite difficult with a push chair because in the city you cant walk across the road as there is no pedestrian crossing. You have to walk downstairs to the metro, walk along then back up the stairs to arrive at the other side of the road. Noone helped us with the pushchair so I had to let Dylan walk up himself and I carried the push chair and bags behind him. I was fed up of bumping him up and down.

We travelled to the Zoo after we had lunch at the Hard Rock Café, there are plenty of bars and restaurants about. To save some money you could take a packed lunch or even have lunch at the zoo but Dylan saw the big guitar outside and was so excited to go in.

The Zoo was surprisingly big, there are a few ways to get there but about 5 minutes from the bus drop off point you can go to Metro Świętokrzyska 06 which is around a 15 minutes ride costing  about £2 (children under 7 go free). Then I used Sat Nav to walk there which is about 5/10 minutes away.  With my phone contract (Vodafone) using data in Europe is the same as if you were using it within the UK. So doesn't cost than normal. We spent nearly a full day there.

There is a Copernicus Science Centre for kids that have educational activities for all ages to get involved in, performance shows, sensory play and a planetarium. Everywhere is easy enough to get to as long as you plan the transport. As I mentioned before, Sat Nav comes in handy. Warsaw is a nice city but Dylan didn't enjoy this as much as other countries. I didn't feel that Warsaw had a buzz about the place. In other countries you can walk around and decide where you are going as you go but with Warsaw I think more planning had to go into it.

I probably wouldnt go again however I am very glad I have been. For the price I paid it was worth it, another country to tick off our travels.

Travel On A Budget #TravelBuddies

I had previously put some travel tips as a single parent on a Group Facebook page and it received a LOT of responses so I thought I would write about my experiences and how I manage to do it on a budget. This may not work for everyone.

I was apprehensive about travelling with a child on my own so I wanted to start of small and eventually gain the confidence to take him further away. Dylan was 1 and half years old when we properly started travelling and now he is so used to it all. Most airlines allow 2 child items on board included in their ticket price (ie car seat, pram, travel cot etc). I only ever used the push chair option  which they let you continue using up until you board the plane however you will need to have it tagged beforehand. If you ‘forget’ to do this then they will often just tag it before you board anyway so saves you waiting in queues before going through customs.

I recommend taking a push chair (obviously depending on age). Even if your child does not normally  use one there is a lot of walking about and it’s a good help for bags and jackets

I always check in online from home so I know that its done. I use the airline apps on my mobile so I can just scan through customs rather than worry about carrying documents. If you have kids you can just skip the individual counters at customs and get the gate opened by a member of staff to get the family through at once.

People have messaged me to say they are worried about their children dealing and ear popping on the flight. Even though Dylan stopped using a dummy I still gave him one on the flight to stop this. When he got to the stage where ‘dummies are for babies’ I gave him a lollipop to suck on. He isn’t allowed lollipops other than on a plane so it keeps him happy.

As much as package deals are convenient they are a lot more expensive than if you do it all individually. They do not suit single parents or anyone on a budget in general. There is something quite liberating knowing you have not let someone else plan your children’s memories.

Flights

The best websites to use in my opinion are Ryan Air and Sky Scanner. A lot of the time if you put in a return flight it will be more expensive than if you do two single flights. It takes more work but it is cheaper if you are on a budget. If you need to change nappies on a flight then the toilets are cramped but you just sit on the toilet lid and lay you child on your lap or just managed it with them standing up if they are older.

Ryan Air :   www.ryanair.com

Ryan air staff are always absolutely brilliant in my opinion. They help out a lot with Dylan, very understanding. I remember they even said to me to press the buzzer and they will sit with Dylan if I needed the toilet. I wasn’t comfortable with this but it was lovely for them to offer and may work for some parents who might have a few children on the flight. Kids are usually tax free so any tax will be deducted at the checkout so even cheaper!!

This site allows you use the ‘Fair Finder’ option under 'plan your trip' to accommodate your travel needs with only Ryan Air flights. Fare Finder allows you to search flights from the airport you want to leave from and an ‘Anywhere’ option for your destination. I NEVER go on Ryan Air for a specific destination. I always type in ‘anywhere’ because it brings up the cheapest flights to choose from and that way it allows you to find flights within your budget and broadens your options.

Ryan Air also allows you to search for the cheapest date within a whole month instead of you having to type in specific dates. You can literally get the cheapest flight with the cheapest date. If you cannot be flexible with dates, for example if you’re a single parent who only gets their kids on certain days then you just search the cheapest flights with your chosen dates.

Skyscanner: www.skyscanner.net

This is like a search engine for lots of airlines, not just Ryan Air. It works on the same principle as above. You are able to search flights for ‘Everywhere’ as your destination. This will bring the cheapest flights up first. The good thing about this site is that it is not specific to one airline and has a wider range of destinations because of this.

I usually take carry on luggage that can do me for a city break instead of paying more for a larger suitcase. It saves time getting bags tagged or waiting to collect. You can hop on and off the plane a lot faster.

People worry that this part of the planning is going to be the costly part. You don’t get anything for free but there is definitely ways around paying stupid prices for essentially just a bed. You just need to know your budget and weigh that up with what feels right for you and your children.

In my travels I use Hotels, Hostels and Air BnB

Hotels : www.booking.com

This is the site I always use for hotels. You have two options where you can either pay a little less if you pay the full bill on the spot or you can pay a little more and have the ability to cancel right up until the last minute on top of not actually paying on arrival. Either way you have a secure place.

With Booking.com you can also filter the search to your needs ie family friends, near the city centre, local kid attractions. It also gives you the distance from requested places such as the airport so you can work out how far you have to travel when you land.

I normally use this because I cant afford flights and hotel altogether so I secure my room and save up until I arrive.

You will get £15 off with my refer a friend link:  https://www.booking.com/s/15_8/c8f39fc9

Hostels : www.hostelworld.com

Hostels are extremely underrated and get a terrible name but they can be pretty great. The thing about hostels which people don’t realise is that they are not all dorm rooms where you need to share with strangers. A lot of them have private rooms with double beds or bunk beds. The downside being the shower is communal and the toilets (usually) are too. When I say communal, they are still private, but it just means you will need to wait your turn. There will usually be more than one toilet on the floor so its never an issue. The hostels are normally clean and tidy, some offer breakfast. The staff in the hostels are often the best – very laid back and approachable. Hostels are cheap for a reason, you will need to bring your own towel or rent one from reception. Sometimes they ask for a refundable deposit for bedsheets to take up to the room with you and the rooms are basic ie Just a bed. However, you are paying the third of the price compared to the hotel which you are only sleeping in anyway. Similar to www.booking.com with this hostel site you can pay the full amount for less or slightly more and pay on arrival. The search box on this website allows you to find family friendly hostels.

Air BnB: www.airbnb.co.uk

This site, in my opinion, is the best one to go for. Especially if you have more than one child. You can normally get a full house cheaper than 1 hotel room I like Air BnB because you feel at home. You are literally in someone’s home. The ‘host’ who is renting the place out is basically on call anytime you need. Due to them wanting high ratings from you they will be very accommodating. I normally message asking for a later check out to fit around my flights and they are happy to allow this. They are great if you get lost or need directions, they often leave recommendations with where is good to go. The only thing with payment is you normally do need to pay in full. The cancellation policies are normally great though so if you did need to cancel you get a full refund. If I have money on my credit card (I usually go for an Air BnB and pay it back bit by bit). I tend to like this option because the apartments are usually out of the city centre so you get more of a feel for the country, you have a host to help you with transport (most speak English, there will be an English flag by their name to confirm this). Being here allows you to buy in breakfast for the mornings so no rushing about, bedrooms for the kids and a living room so you can watch tv without waking them up. Studio apartments are becoming popular too and they worked out  perfect for me travelling with a child. I recently paid 38 Euros for a studio apartment (kitchen, bathroom, living room and double bed) in Berlin.

If you do not have an account then use this link www.airbnb.co.uk/c/gillianl2025 where you will get £25 off your first booking.

Berlin #TravelBuddies

I wanted to venture further out now that I had the confidence after Dublin. I chose Berlin because it wasn't too far away and the flights were cheap.

Again we arrived at the airport already checked in a few hours before. Dylan was nearly three, I chose to take his push chair because it’s easier for getting him around the airport and the city as well as it being good for holding any bags and jackets.

We flew with Ryan air then Easy Jet. The flights were £12.99 there and £16.99 back. No tax for children so even cheaper! We flew from Glasgow to Berlin Schönefeld (SFX) was 2 hours. I felt that Ryan Air were more accommodating and helpful with Dylan but Easy Jet didn’t do anything wrong they were less approachable.

We stayed in a hotel and a hostel. The hotel was Park Plaza – Nuremberg. Bahnhofstrasse 5, 90402. I chose to stay in the city centre again because I was still finding my way with travelling. There is a train station about 10 minutes from the airport that goes directly to the city centre, it’s a maximum of 4 Euros and Dylan was free.(1 hour) I was panicking about getting to the train station from the airport but EVERYONE is going in the same direction so you knew where to go. I got a taxi previous to this which was 40 Euros so we split it for convenience (25 minutes).

The transport including the Metro system is always bang on time, clean and reliable. There is normally a lot of queues for the ticket machines though as you need to validate your ticket (stamp it-really easy to figure out). Easily accessible with a push chair and helpful locals. Even though we did not share the same language they helped with Dylan’s push chair, opening doors etc.
There was a hotel just outside the city centre - Jugendgästehaus Hauptbahnhof . This was around 60 Euros a night, has bunk beds, private rooms and child friendly. With most hostels there is communal bathrooms but that’s why its so cheap.
We used the Hop On Hop Off Bus again, booked online £20 – Dylan free. I felt really comfortable using them because there are interpreters for English speakers to understand where you are and what attractions you are seeing, We took full advantage of the bus, plenty of space for push chair access too The City is clean and extremely modern in places. Our favourite place was Checkpoint Charlie. There were plenty of restaurants and cafes, the tour bus takes you right outside.
There is a little beach area surrounded by bars, beach chairs and sand. Surrounded by the Berlin wall crossing point.
There is a little photobox that prints out vintage looking pictures for 2 Euros. The Haulescost memorial was spectacular, cleverly designed to make you feel uncomfortable. I was criticised by a few for taking Dylan but I look at it in the sense that I had a moment of realising that I can never take him for granted. There are no graphic pictures for him to see just a memorial for him to walk around like a maze.
